Why do Teachers make the sign of the cross before or after their name
In Wayist tradition the sign of the cross before or after a teacher’s name is a ranking symbol. When the + is before the name, it indicated the person is one of the few top ranking Teachers. Sometimes there may be only one such a teacher and at other times (as in the 1990s) there were five. When + is after the name, it indicated the person is an ordained Teacher.
Therefore, +Yusa achieved the highest ranking in the 1980s. Before that he was Yusa+.
The + also abbreviates the writing. Rather than always having to write Senior Acharya Yusa, the same content is conveyed by writing +Yusa.
In Roman script it is also acceptable use to make the + the initial capital of the name, as in +yusa.
Why the + symbol is used?
The + symbol has always (for the past 10,000 years) been associated with the sun which is the source of life on Earth. For many ages, the sun was revered as a sort of deity because it gives life and light and without it no life will be sustained. From there we still recite the beautiful Gyatri Mantra, or by another name the Sāvitri Mantra. Savitr is the sun, which is a symbol of the Divine Energy that sustains all life in the universe.
